Construction of proposition: apoha and non-classical logics

چکیده

This talk will aim to provide an account of the apoha theory of delineation by analogy with the construction of propositions in some non-classical logics. In such logics, not all sets of possible worlds are taken to be propositions. In quantum logic, for example, an arbitrary set of states may not exactly represent the semantical counterpart of a legitimate proposition. Moreover, the negation operator in intuitionistic logic is essentially a closure operator. A well-known result is that the double-negated propositions of intuitionistic logic behave as if they were propositions of classical logic. In logics where disjunction behaves differently from classical disjunction, a closure operator often delivers a certain kind of well-behaved proposition. In some cases, it constructs a proposition which is legitimate in a semantics where states as primitive. This talk will propose a reading of the notion of apoha in Yogacara as a closure operation. In Yogacara, a language consists of names, phrases, and sentences. All components are classified, on the basis of no-entity and no-mind, as dependent apon mental phenomena. Names are the epistemic basis of the world. The application of a name leads to nimitta, and the application of language leads to misplacing non-existent artha as real. Thus, the meaning of a word does not correspond to a positive and previously existing entity; its delimitation is circumscribed only negatively in relation to words. The same applies to concepts as to words. Apoha, as an epistemic closure, plays an essential role in construction of images out of emptiness. A consequence of this proposal is that understanding in Yogacara can be read as the counterpart of a completeness proof in formal logic.

Truth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics

The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...

Determination of Suitable Areas for underground Dam Construction Using Boolean and Fuzzy Logics in Central Areas of Ardebil Province

In the arid and semi-arid area's rainfall have considerable changes in terms of time and amount that make the water resource management an important issue. In this research, using both Boolean and Fuzzy logic were zoned potentiality suitable areas for construction of underground dams. The study area is located in the central region of Ardabil province with 7461 km2 area and semi-arid climate. F...

Conditionalization and total knowledge

This paper employs epistemic logic to investigate the philosophical foundations of Bayesian updating in belief revision. By Bayesian updating, we understand the tenet that an agent’s degrees of belief—assumed to be encoded as a probability distribution—should be revised by conditionalization on the agent’s total knowledge up to that time. A familiar argument, based on the construction of a diac...

Continuity, freeness, and filtrations

The role played by continuous morphisms in propositional modal logic is investigated: it turns out that they are strictly related to filtrations and to suitable variants of the notion of a free algebra. We also employ continuous morphisms in the incremental construction of (standard) finitely generated free S4-algebras. This Technical Report reproduces the content of my talk given at the worksh...

Deceit and indefeasible knowledge: the case of dubitatio

The current trend in knowledge revision in the Dynamic Epistemic Logic tradition focuses on the addition of new knowledge, rather than the possibility of losing knowledge. Yet there are natural situations where there is a need to be able to model the retraction of a proposition from a knowledge base. One situation where this is systematically required is the variant of the medieval theory of ob...
